St John’s Abbey Gatehouse – Colchester

Skills: Ink Drawings

Until recently I worked just around the corner from this rather beautiful structure. It suggests it will lead to a huge and beautiful abbey that is no longer there, promising much and not delivering. The abbey dated back to the time of William The Conqueror, and would have been a huge presence in the town, but it suffered considerable damage as a Royalist stronghold during the siege of Colchester in 1648 and didn’t last much after that time.

Instead of being disappointed perhaps I should be grateful that it has survived and is still with us.
